Building Community Through Kindness and Connection All Month Long

February 6, 2025

Community is an invaluable resource that, just like any relationship, needs to be nurtured and takes time to build. When we put time and energy into building meaningful connections, sharing our strengths and kindness–and understanding our own feelings and those of others, the outcomes can have lasting positive effects for generations.

We all have periods of time when we feel heightened–and even overwhelming–emotions. Times of heightened emotion are opportunities to better understand our feelings and those of others, to cultivate empathy, and to practice positive communication and relationship building. This is the basis of bonds across differences and appreciation for what, at our core, is the same.

When things feel too big to handle or out of our control, one of the best things we can do is something entirely within our control: strengthening our connections with others through kindness. We each belong to many different communities, whether we realize it or not - our neighborhoods, families, networks of friends, workplaces, schools, and classrooms. If one small act of kindness can have a ripple effect throughout an entire community, imagine what can happen when you intentionally build kindness, empathy, and understanding into your community culture.

“We know that it is critical for every child to feel recognized and validated from their earliest days — to understand that their voice matters, and is heard. Emotion is the universal first language for all children, one they all speak from birth, regardless of background. They develop in the context of relationships, and the words and actions of educators and caregivers help inform children’s understanding of their world, and of themselves. All children must feel that they are understood and valued equally, regardless of their race, religion, experience, or abilities.”

The best place to start is at the beginning, with our littlest learners. They learn by watching and mirroring your actions and reactions, meaning how we respond to and treat others matters. We have a tremendous opportunity to lead by example, starting at home and in the classroom. And the best part? We can find joy and build community in the process.
